Employees and children of employees of companies or organizations who are current members of the Piedmont Human Resource Association will be eligible to apply. Scholastic merit is the principal criteria used in selecting scholarship recipients.
Each year PHRA offers a $1,000 Scholarship to a deserving recipient. The scholarship enables us to support others who are pursuing their dreams by beginning or advancing their education. The recipient must meet criteria established in our by-laws, including attending an accredited two or four year undergraduate college or university. Scholastic merit is the principal criteria used in selecting a scholarship recipient; however, extra-curricular activities, such as sports, clubs, community activities, civic projects and involvement with their church are also important and taken into consideration.
In 2016 we had 10 applications for the scholarship. Although the selection process was very competitive, one name rose to the top of the list – Carson Orr. Carson is a senior at Ardrey Kell High School in Charlotte, NC. He will graduate as a salutatorian of a class with 650 students. He plans to attend either UNC Chapel Hill or Dartmouth College and major in mathematics, engineering, or business. Some of Carson’s achievements involve placing 4th in the nation at a national competition for Engineering Design, acting as VP of the Tech Student Association, and as President of the Science National Honor Society. In addition, Carson has spent a large portion of his time on the soccer field. He has not only played on the varsity team with his high school, but also for the US Soccer Development Academy which is the highest level for youth soccer in the country. Carson has also been employed part-time with Carowinds Amusement Park as a ride attendant and ride operator on the weekends.
Robin Saunders presented Carson with the scholarship award. Carson’s father, Thomas Orr with Poppelmann Plastics, was also in attendance. Congratulations to Carson. We wish him the best in his future and are delighted to be able to help with his journey.
